Brampton Way Community Park

Portishead in Bloom is working with several partners in this exciting scheme which includes Gordano School, North Somerset Housing, the Police and North Somerset Parks, Open Spaces and local residents. The Royal Horticultural Society together with the Woodland Trust offered free trees to In Bloom groups and we planted our “whips” on Sunday, 27th March at Brampton Way Community Park. The species included blackthorn, hawthorn, birch and oak and are particularly beneficial to wildlife. Fourteen volunteers turned out and we planted the “whips” in four curved bays with spaces between.

There is was a very long wall full of old graffiti at the Brampton Way Park and so funding has been obtained to run a community wall art project which was designed and painted by Gordano School students during July. This should make a significant difference to the open space. The project was led by a specialist open air artist so that local residents will hopefully enjoy a much improved open space. North Somerset Council have fenced off the play area which should encourage the neighbouring Play Group to use the play facilities. Portishead in Bloom will be involved in further planting around the fenced off area at a later stage.

The area was once farmed by High Street Farm, Portishead, before being sold off for housing by Bristol Corporation in the 1960s. Until this time, there were many orchards of both pear and apple trees and it would be gratifying to reflect this by planting a variety of fruit trees and shrubs in the open space. It is a project that could last for several years with more planting and more play facilities designed and installed by Gordano School students.
