28 November 2012: We are appealing for help to make some new flags for the town. Each year, ahead of the judging, we put flags up in the High Street, and they remain until after the Carnival and Flower Show. Some of the existing flags are now beyond repair and we need someone who can make some new ones for next  year’s display. Click for photo.

9/10 June 2012: Open Gardens weekend

This year we opened 15 gardens, all very different in their styles. The weather was kind to us for the most part and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The expected rain on Sunday came late giving people an unexpected few hours to get round the gardens they had missed on Saturday.

We took lots of photos, so have a look at them in the Open Gardens 2012 page. We would like to thank all the gardeners for opening their lovely gardens, and all the members of the public who bought a programme and visited the gardens.

Special thanks must go to the Windibank family who not only opened their garden again, but provided food both days and raised money through a raffle they ran over the weekend and at our May plant sale.

We would also like to thank Morgan Westley and Season Florists, both in the High Street for their help in selling the programmes.

If you are interested in opening your garden for next year, please contact Sandy Tebbutt. Keep an eye out for the date of next year’s Open Gardens weekend!

15 April 2012: We invited children to come to the grassed area opposite the Open Air Swimming Pool in Esplanade Road to plant ox-eye daisies. We had 150 plugs to plant and the children soon got digging and planting. Photo

Everyone enjoyed themselves on a lovely sunny, but chilly, morning and after the daisies were planted, parents, helpers and children enjoyed juice and home-made fairy cakes and rock buns.
Portishead in Bloom decided to plant ox-eye daisies there because these once grew in their thousands on the Lake Grounds before grass cutting eliminated them. Many local people call them moon daisies and speak about the time when they were prolific on the Lake Grounds. We hope that our planting will be the start of regenerating these lovely plants that are especially beneficial to insects and bees.
We also sowed wild flower seed on an area at the amphitheatre on Port Marine and at the shelter at the beginning of Sheepway. Happily, both the daisies and seed have been well-watered in by recent rain and we are hopeful of some good wild flower displays this summer for the delight of wildlife and residents alike.

A big thank you to all those people who contributed generously to our collection weekend at the Co-op recently. Waitrose has nominated us as recipients of their token collection for the month of April. We hope to enjoy residents' continued support.

If you would like to help Portishead in Bloom in another way, then you could sponsor a carousel basket at £15 each or a tub at £50 each.

4 April 2012: The Lions and Portishead in Bloom planted 420 mixed saplings on the Picnic Grounds in Portishead. Some were planted as a hedge, others will grow into specimen trees. It was a very windy and cold afternoon but a group of ten people completed the task in 2½ hours. The trees have been donated by the Woodland Trust and form part of the Lions' tree planting which has been done world wide. Portishead in Bloom is very pleased to help with this project. Photo.
